ADHD in Women

Wai Yong discusses the varied ways that ADHD are presented in women – and how discrepancies between women’s experiences and cultural standards may increase stereotypes and delay diagnoses and understanding of neurodivergent frameworks. She’ll address the summary of coping strategies found to be helpful by women with these experiences.

Navelsträngen: Intercultural Tanbour Project

Iranian-born tanbour player, educator, and sculptor Maryam shares the story of her brainchild, Navelsträngen; an intercultural, women-centered project to build and put the tanbours — 5000-year-old instrument that is considered “men’s instrument”, still played today in western Iran and other parts of the Middle East — into children’s hands in Sweden, many of whom are refugees from Middle East, with the help of bass maker Elinore and the local female luthiers who will be guest speakers.

Civil engineer and technology expert Eva will introduce the International Musical Instrument Registry; an ambitious, revolutionary, all-encompassing global digital database project using blockchain database technology designed to help musicians, luthiers, collectors, dealers, and researchers document and track the provenance, history, ownership, physical aspects of musical instruments and more, with input from luthiers on creating appropriate metadata fields.

Body Symmetry & Balance : From the Circus to the Bench

Brigid discusses mobility, strength, balance, and symmetry – movement frameworks that help reduce stress, joint inflammation, and eventual injury to our bodies — by training an ambidextrous brain; and how luthiers can safely pursue a more balanced workflow: engaging opposing muscle groups, seeking contrasting activities, and engaging the whole body in the craft of lutherie.

Pernambuco Crisis: CITES Change & Ramifications

The transport/use of pernambuco wood is being challenged with an upcoming vote: On November 14, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) gathers representatives from nearly 200 nations to discuss protective measures.
As musicians and archetiers face travel/resource limitations and conservation policies, Lynn discusses the potential impacts of new regulations, along with global collaborative efforts to support the environment, reuse materials, and keep the culture alive in a changing landscape.

In this special co-presentation with Lutherística, Argentinian violin maker, tango dancer, and activist Agustina will talk about the feminism movement in Argentina and Latin America, and how the women in the culture of tango music, dance, and lutherie tackle their own unique intersectional challenges.
Guest speakers will share their own experiences with the collaborative project spearheaded by Jeemin –a luthier, musician, and tango dancer herself– culminating in 2 separate performances in New York City & Buenos Aires premiering tango music composed by women, played by female musicians, on the instruments made by women.
